The author gives a definition of geodetical and cartographical information. The cartographical presentations as analogical, structural reality models are included in the communication process wherein various experts, cartographers and users directly cooperate. Because of the noise which occurs in the communication channel, the cartographical information is often deformed and does not correspond to the real state. The necessary corrections are carried out by an expert who changes or completes his reality model with the new basic information, or by a cartographer coding the new information by means of the cartographical symbol language. The user can in this case correct his conception of reality. The cartographical communication process is a dynamic one, and the cartographical presentation is an information store of great capacity. The author further uses the information theory analysing the entropy 1 cm squared of a topographical map on a scale of 1 : 1000000. By contents, maps are divided into systems (settlements, special signs, roads, hydrography, relief) and changed into direct elements (special attention is given to the relief as a continual system of map contents). The entropy is determined separately for each system. Since the whole map contents are bound up with the relief the sum of entropies gives the final entropy. This numerical analysis of information map contents indicates the degree of obsolescence, showing the difference between the cartographical information and reality. The coefficient of allowable information losses defined by the information contents of the newest aeropictures stimulates correction of the deficiency or reprinting of the map. /TRRL/
