THE EXPANDED EEC
The Common Market Commission is so confident for the future of the Six's shipbuilding it has proposed that early this year national aids to the industry should be reduced and that, moreover, steps should be taken to harmonize national aids to shipbuilding on a Community-wide basis. It estimates that the total annual turnover of the Community's present construction is running at $1,500 m--of which something over half is accounted for by exports. In presenting these proposals the Commission stresses that there has been an evolution in this section of the EEC's economies and says that recent advances have more than compensated for the difficulties of the past few years. In spite of certain liquidity problems, the industry is "very active", and it points out that all OECD countries have already adopted a resolution limiting subsidised interest rates on export credits for shipbuilders to a minimum 7.5%.
