DURABLE CONCRETE STRUCTURES IN THE EXTREME ENVIRONMENT OF THE MIDDLE EAST

In order to produce durable reinforced concrete structures in extreme environments, it is necessary to apply the authors' experience of the performance of similar structures under comparable conditions and to understand the main factors which control deterioration processes. It is also necessary to acknowledge the limits of their understanding, particularly when a very long service life is required, and to plan long-term monitoring and maintenance strategies to allow the risk to be managed. By using such an approach, a durability plan can be produced. This paper outlines the methods adopted for producing durability plans for the construction of new structures, with particular reference to the hot, saline conditions in the Middle East. A risk register approach is proposed for producing a formalised and efficient methodology for future durability plans. For the covering abstract see IRRD 899666.
