SITE INVESTIGATION FOR SOIL NAILED STRUCTURES
In the last few years there has been an increased use of soil nails in the UK as part of permanent or temporary earth retaining structures on a variety of projects. Site investigations carried out for these projects do not specifically address the requirements for soil nail design. This paper discusses the information required from a site investigation in order to optimize the design of soil nails, together with different investigation methods, sampling and relevant field and laboratory tests. The installation of trial soil nails at the investigation stage of a project with associated pull-out tests is reviewed in terms of practical approaches and relevance to design practice. Results of a site investigation for a large soil nailed retaining wall in Plateau Gravels and Bracklesham Beds at the A31 Ashley Heath junction in Dorset is also presented.
