WEAR MEASUREMENTS ON BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS USING STANDARD SAMPLES

The object of this investigation was to develop a new method for measuring the wear of bituminous surfacings. In this method, the wear of the surfacing is related to that of A standard cylinder inserted into the surfacing, thus eliminating the effect of local factors such as traffic, weather, etc. Standard samples of high uniformity can be made, but their insertion is difficult, and differential settlement causes large scatters in the readings. The method itself is very laborious and lengthy. A modification prevents differential settlement by placing a foil on the old surface before the new surfacing is applied, and then drilling a hole into which the standard sample is placed. Measurement is then possible electromagnetically, but the method is still too complicated. Wear can also be measured in the laboratory, using a simple test apparatus, on cores taken from surfacings when the standard samples are placed. Some correlation is obtained between laboratory wear and wear on the road, despite the simplicity of the apparatus. The method is simple and quick, easy to carry out, and the results are sufficiently promising to warrant further development. /TRRL/
