INVESTIGATION INTO THE NEED FOR CHECKPOINTS ALONG MOTORWAYS
UTREDNING OM BEHOVET AV KONTROLLPLATSER LAENGS MOTORVAEGAR OCH MOTORTRAFIKLEDER
There is no provision in existing highway legislation to permit police checks on vehicles and drivers on motorways. A test check point was installed on the e3 motorway near Gothenburg and an investigation was also instituted to examine the need for, and the design of, these checkpoints. In view of traffic safety requirements and the need to keep costs as low as possible, it is difficult to suggest A standard solution regarding layout and location. Purpose-built checkpoint installations would cost at least skr. 0.5-1 M, and it is therefore proposed that checkpoints should be established adjacent to rest areas and traffic interchanges. The police should also be given powers to carry out speed checks in conjunction with road works on motorways. /TRRL/
