TREATMENT OF SWELLING SOILS, WEST OF AGATE, COLORADO. PROJECT I 70-4(48)347

This research was an attempt to determine the effectiveness of a 2 foot (.6 m) subexcavated section, a 4 foot (1.2 m) subexcavation and a catalytically blown membrane section in counteracting the effects of a swelling soil on a pavement system. Roadways in similar subgrade areas just east of this project had shown as much as 15 inches (38 cm) of vertical rise after a 1960 construction project. However, an eastbound lane of Interstate 70 only 100 feet (30 m) south of the experimental westbound lane was also constructed in 1960, and it is in good condition after 15 years of service.
