THE VERTICAL MOTION OF AN AIR CUSHION VEHICLE AND THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF CUSHION PRESSURE

The spatial and temporal distribution of pressure in the cushion of an air-cushion-supported vehicle operating over a rigid periodic wave field is reported. By comparing measured and computed angular (pitch) accelerations, it is shown that the spatial pressure distribution is the major mechanism for pitch excitation of the vehicle. The heave motion is found to be more dependent upon other mechanisms for the vertical excitation forces. Various forms of the spatial pressure distribution are examined using experimental data.
