STUDY OF THE ECONOMICS OF ROAD VEHICLE LIMITS: COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SURVEYS

The details are set forth of a classification survey (to obtain information on the spectrum of commercial vehicles on each road class), and a mass and dimension survey (for information on commercial vehicle characteristics, in particular loadings and dimensions), as well as the data processing systems used in both surveys. The surveys were carried out at a large number of representative locations on the major road system in all states and territories. Approximately 350,000 trucks were counted and classified, and 27,000 were stopped and their characteristics recorded. All data were coded directly into forms suitable for computer processing. The surveys were statistically designed and monitored. Computer programs were written to analyze the data relevant to any examination of road transport operations, and in particular, mass and dimension regulations.
