FOUNDATION INSTALLATION TECHNIQUES FOR OFFSHORE PLATFORMS

During a short span of five or six years, the North Sea has become an important proving ground for new equipment and new techniques in offshore operations. Because of its usual combination of severe climate, deep water and great distances from shore, the North Sea oil development presents problems more difficult than the industry has previously confronted in any other part of the world. This is true both for the marine construction industry and the offshore drilling industry. This paper discusses some of the problems ecountered by a small but highly specialized segment of the industry which is concerned with the installation of foundations for North Sea platforms. It also outlines some tentative solutions to these problems and suggests how the experience gained in the North Sea may help reduce costs of future offshore developments here and elsewhere.
