RISE IN TRANSPORT COSTS DUE TO LIMITATION OF VEHICLE COMBINATION LENGTH TO 18 M
TRANSPORTKOSTNADSOEKNING VID BEGRAENSNING AV FORDONSKOMBINATIONENS LANGD TILL 18 METER
The object of this study is to show the effect on costs due to utilisation of load capacity under different transport conditions. Terminal times must be kept to minimum, if transport capacity is to be high. Input data for the computer program included wages and costs, utilisation times, depreciation, fuel consumption, load capacity, terminal times, etc. Most loads transported have a large volume in relation to their weight. Costs for this type of transport depend not only on length of haul but also on terminal time and extent of filling. Calculations were made for semitrailers and for lorries with trailers, both 18 M long. It appears that if terminal times are reduced on changing to 18 M length, the rise in cost will vary between 14% and 24%. Semitrailers seem better from an economic point of view, but traffic safety considerations may outweigh the advantages. In view of the fact that calculations assumed 100% degree of utilisation, and that this is often less than 100%, it is possible that the reduction from 24M to 18M will not cause major increases in cost. /TRRL/
