STUDY AND RESEARCH ON ROAD TECHNIQUE AND THE ECONOMY OF INFRASTRUCTURES. ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF THE AASHO ROAD TEST

ETUDES ET RECHERCHES SUR LA TECHNIQUE ROUTIERE ET SUR L'ECONOMIE DES INFRASTRUCTURES

Following a brief description of the Maryland road test, the washo road test and the lahr (Germany) road test, mention is made of the regulations governing the size and weight of vehicles throughout the world and of infrastructure costs. Full details are given of the AASHO road test and of the results obtained by the Highway Research Board on rigid and flexible pavements. A study is presented of the influence of the AASHO road test on transport policies in the usa, and proposals are put forward for (1) determining the maximum dimension and weight of commercial vehicles, and (2) apportioning taxes among the various categories of commercial vehicles. The AASHO test results for rigid and flexible pavements are compared with results obtained with the latest techniques used in the usa and throughout the world. These findings are applied to the determination of the overall costs of road infrastructures and the apportioning of infrastructure costs among various categories of vehicles. Finally the influence of vehicle weight on the deterioration of existing highways is investigated together with the relation between vehicle weight and the characteristics of new highways. /TRRL/
