NOISE CONTROL IN SHIPS
The aim has been to present the "state of the art" of noise control as applied to ship constructions to engineers and shipbuilders not previously trained in acoustics. Each chapter is introduced by a note pinpointing the essentials of the noise control matter dealt with in the chapter as follows: 1) "Terminology", introduces acoustical definitions and simple theory. 2) "Measurement and Evaluation of Noise", contains a short description of instrumentation and measurement technique, human reaction to noise and a survey of some existing National Regulations on Noise in Ships (West German, Swedish and Norwegian). 3)"The Propeller as an Excitation Source", describes the fundamentals of the mechanism of propeller induced forces. 4) "Noise from Machinery Components", deals with the emission of noise from various components of Ship Machinery and Equipment, and includes a note on Silencers. 5) "Elastic Mounting", presents a fairly extensive treatment of principles on design of elastically supported systems, with particular reference to ship conditions. 6) "The Engine Room" illustrates control of airborne noise, sound insulated control rooms and hoods over machinery components. 7) "The sources in the accommodation area, the control of noise through single and double leaf walls, composite walls (doors, windows) and the measurement of Sound Reduction index. Floating floors are also discussed here. 8) "Noise from Fans and Aircondition Systems", shows how to design for low noise transmision through ducting, and to evaluate the resulting noise level emitted at intake or outlets. 9) "Planning and Maintenance", sums up the steps necessary in noise reduction schemes in Ships and stresses the importance of maintenance of the acoustical devices.
