PLAN APPRAISAL BY COMPUTER: SAFETY AND ECONOMY FOR THE NEW BREED OR SHIPS
Making a considerable investment in advanced computing facilities, Lloyd's Register produced a computer-based ship structural analysis capability. This facility, known by the generic name LR PASS-Plan Appraisal System for Ships, provides a wide range of computer programs and other systems to aid the tasks of plan appraisal and approval. LR PASS deals with all aspects of ship construction and operation, ranging from structural analysis to the calculation of hydrodynamic loads. A structural analysis performed within the LR PASS package can be broken down into four inter-related steps, covering loads, structural capability, design criteria and a factor of safety. Each aspect requires a degree of mathematical modelling and this is either carried out automatically by LR PASS program or performed by the surveyor or designer.
