THE U.S. NAVY'S INTEGRATED BRIDGE SYSTEM

The Defense Mapping Agency's role in supporting the development of the U.S. Navy's Integrated Bridge System has been a unique experience, in that a completely new charting product has evolved which could revolutionize traditional navigation techniques. The development of the first digital nautical charts to be used successfully on a U.S. Navy FF-1052 Class Destroyer required a close working relationship between the Defense Mapping Agency, the David W. Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center, the Naval Air Development Center and the Sperry Corporation-Sperry Systems Management Division. The procedures required to produce the digital nautical charts, how they are utilized and the anticipated future of this effort are discussed.
