EXHAUST EMISSIONS AND FUEL CONSUMPTION OF VEHICLES FITTED WITH OTTO ENGINES IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

ABGASEMISSIONEN UND KRAFTSTOFFVERBRAUCH VON KRAFTFAHRZEUGEN MIT OTTOMOTOR IN DER BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND

Based on defined driving cycles there is a possibility to simulate on a roller type test stand the driving behaviour of motor vehicles at limited maximum driving speeds in metropolitan areas. In order to determine an average exhaust emission and fuel consumption representative of the motor vehicles in the Federal Republic of Germany a number of motor vehicles are taken for such tests which are selected from exhaust-specific points of view, such as vehicle mass, vehicle age and engine performed life, working volume, output etc. The results of such tests are presented in the form of so-called exhaust emission coefficients in dependence from the mean driving speed for a certain reference year. Compared with the test results of the reference year 1970 those for the year 1975 show a visible reduction of the exhaust emission components CO and HC in the range of the mean driving speed as fixed for the European test cycle. This reduction is the consequence of the exhaust emission laws ECE R15. However, this improvement is accompanied by a considerable deterioration of the nitrogen oxide emission. A breakdown of the vehicle fleet into mass and displacement classes results in a smaller consumption of fuel and a more favourable emission behaviour of smaller working volumes and vehicle masses. The influence of maintenance on the fuel consumption and the emission behaviour is shown. The procedure outlined here for the determination of the mean exhaust emission of vehicles with otto engine is a good means to determine the effects of the legal exhaust emission regulations on the actual emission behaviour and the fuel consumption of the motor vehicles. /Author/TRRL/
