THE SAFETY BENEFIT OF ARTERIAL STREET WIDENING

Based on a report by the authors for the City of Los Angeles Department of Traffic, the present summary describes the before and after accident history of 31.5 miles of urban arterial street widening involving 40 reaches of street. In all, 4,035 reported accidents were analyzed. Due to the large sample base studied, the degree of safety improvement shown might be considered for use as a guide for evaluating similar contemplated projects in other urban areas where there is insufficient local historical data. /Author/
