UNDERSTANDING FLOW-INDUCED VIBRATIONS, PART 1--BASIC CONCEPTS; FLUID FORCING FUNCTIONS
In analyses or tests to evaluate a given design in terms of flow-induced vibrations, an understanding of the fluid forces is of primary importance. The Author distinguishes two types of forces: fluid excitation forces and fluid/structure coupling forces. Part 1 deals with fluid excitation forces, four types being discussed. These forces are shown to depend on the characteristics of the flow and the geometry of the structure of interest as well as on adjacent structures and boundaries. Examples are given to illustrate that, in some cases, these forces may be altered via feedback from structural motion.
