The prime necessity for the maintenance of safety at sea lies behind all technological development of shipping. Sequences of improvement and change in merchant ship design, choices of machinery and equipment present trends towards greater use of remote control and automatic operative systems are looked at with the benefit of wide experience of sea service and inspection of ships in both private and public sectors of the shipping industry.
