A crash study is described, which seeks to simulate an actual impact against a tree. The aim was to obtain the real deformation of the long channel bar of the chassis, in order to be able to carry out a replacement part repair. The vehicle is driven by a drive unit, consisting of an electro motor and a cable drum with cable control. Before reaching the barrier the vehicle is detached from the cable control on driving through a light shaft. One hundred metres beyond the light barrier, the cable winch is separated from the motor with the aid of an electro magnetic toothed coupling. The measured values are transmitted with the aid of a special cable attached to the vehicle. They are recorded on a magnetic tape and transmitted on to light receptive paper by means of an ultraviolet recorder. The impact velocity is determined by means of a measuring probe, which traverses exactly one metre following the detaching of the control cable. As long as the probe lies between both light barriers, the impulses of a frequency generator are summated to a kilocycle per second, and thus the velocity is calculated.
