EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES CARRIED OUT WITH A DRIVING SIMULATOR TO ASSESS THE EFFICIENCY OF USING CARRIAGEWAY MARKINGS FOR ADVANCE INFORMATION ON TRAFFIC PATTERNS

EXPERIMENTELLE UNTERSUCHUNGEN MIT EINEM FAHRSIMULATOR ZUR UEBERPUEFUNG DER WIRKSAMKEIT VON VORANZEIGEN DES STRASSENVERLAUFS DURCH FAHRBAHNMARKIERUNGEN

Continuous advance information (Va) which appears on the edge of the right hand carriageway in the form of carriageway marking and provides the driver with information concerning the difficulties facing him on future road sections, influenced the behaviour of persons tested in the anticipated manner. In this way, drivers adhered more strictly to lanes, steering movements were more consistent and less abrupt and vehicle speed was adapted to existing traffic conditions. The latter particularly held good for such relevant areas as sharp bends. It is shown that Va was both adopted and implemented, that the indication process of the Va was openly acknowledged and that the Va had led to a modification of the operational characteristics of driving technique. This may be regarded as critical to vehicle steering on road sections requiring frequent cornering, particularly on the basis of a more accurate consideration of the total system. However, tests must now be carried out in order to establish how far the results obtained with the aid of the simulated experiment may be applied to the actual driving situation. /TRRL/
