RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EARTH MOVING OPERATIONS

LA RECOMMANDATION POUR LES TERRASSEMENTS ROUTIERS

General guidelines are given to highway engineers for the design of projects, their drafting, and the execution and control of the works. In the first part bibliographic references are quoted together with extracts of different world road congresses. The preparation of the document described took five years to summarize the experience of engineers having worked on construction sites in earthworks during the last fifteen years. Details are given of some experimental studies carried out to broaden the knowledge of the subject, e.g. Compaction of soil. Part 2 reproduces the contents of the three volumes which form recommendations: 1. Volume 1 entitled: "establishment of projects and conduct of earthworks" describes the technical and administrative aspects of the works and explains how to use volumes 2 and 3 according to present regulations. 2. Volume 2 entitled "use of soil for embankments and improved subgrades" proposes a new soil classification for the use of soil in earthworks and defines for each category the standard practices to follow to build standard-quality embankments and improved subgrades. 3. Volume 3 entitled: "compaction of embankments and improved subgrades "gives a quantitative definition of the conditions of use of compaction equipment currently available on the market. An extensive bibliography is appended. /TRRL/
