RESULTS OF A SURVEY ON DATA ON PASSENGER CAR VIBRATIONS

ERGEBNISSE EINER UMFRAGE ZU DATEN VON PERSONENWAGEN-SCHWINGUNGSSYSTEMEN

The Institute for Vehcile Technology of the Technical University of Brunswick circulated a questionnaire to all German car manufacturers concerning vehicle oscillation systems. The characteristic frequencies and damping mass were computed from the data provided, as well as factors correlating comfort of ride and safety with vehicle speed and carriageway irregularities. The evaluation gives characteristic frequencies for the body from 0.9 to 1.7 hz. Similar variations in the body damping mass within the range of 0.15 to 0.45 were observed. Characteristic axle frequencies have generally been placed between 10 and 11 hz, with no values below the lower limit, whereas a few results were obtained of up to 15 hz where axle mass is small compared to body weight. Computation of the comfort and safety factors shows that travelling on a motorway at maximum speed compares favourably from the point of view of surface irregularities with travelling on the average rural highway at 100 km/h. /TRRL/
