SLOPE STABILITY - 1: NATURAL SLOPES; PART 2: NATURAL SLOPES

STABILITE DES TALUS - 1: VERSANTS NATURELS; 2EME PARTIE: VERSANTS NATURELS

This general report reviews the methods used in France within the framework of the: Laboratoires des Ponts et "Chaussees" for studying natural slopes. The main zones of instability are mentioned, and the parameters used for the Roquebilliere). The case of the failure of an embankment mechanism of progressive failure is outlined in the laboratory and in-situ. The various phases of the investigation carried out before the analysis of stability are mentioned: topographic, geological, hydraulic, geotechnical and mechanical investigations. The procedure of stability analysis is outlined together with the precautions to be taken when carrying out earthworks in unstable terrain. Two lias clay slopes inwhich landslides occurred, were monitored. Because of the heterogeneity of the site, it was difficult to interpret measurements. Stability calculations emphasize the importance of residual shear strength when reactivation occurs and tend to confirm the notion of softening in the case of initial sliding. A trias clay slope slips on a failure surface at a depth of approximately 10 meters. There is practically no means of stabilizing the whole site which is threatening the village partially destroyed by a mud slide in 1926 (the village of roquebilliere). The case of the failure of an embankment slope during construction (Monnetier and Mornex) shows that, when there is a risk of failure in the short term, a follow up study of deformations during earth moving operations, facilitates the prevention of accelerated movements that could lead to failure. This was done during the repair stage; the operation was carried out at a controlled rate making it possible to bring the embankment to its normal level. Studies are being conducted of creep during the undrained phase. /TRRL/
