THE COMPACTION OF ROADBASES. SELECTION AND USE OF COMPACTION MACHINES

COMPACTAGE DES ASSISES DE CHAUSSEES - CHOIX DU MATERIEL ET DES SE MODALITES D'EMPLOI

This article defines the technical environment within which compaction equipment is selected. Four factors condition compaction. They are: the behaviour of the material subjected to compaction, thickness of the layer compacted, bearing capacity of the supporting soil, and quality requirements. The classification of different types of machines is reviewed together with the role of operational parameters. A table of correspondance shows types of equipment recommended for various sites, taking into account the present knowledge of compactor selection. Attention is drawn to the importance of machine output which determines the number and types of the machines used. /TRRL/
