TRAVEL TIMES AS TRAFFIC ASSIGNMENT INPUT: A FORGOTTEN PROBLEM

REISTIJDEN ALS ASSIGNMENT INVOER: EEN VERGETEN PROBLEEM

In this article it is argued that attention should be paid to the improvement of assignment input quality, as well as to the development of increasingly sophisticated assignment models, in order to increase the precision of assignment results. In particular, emphasis should be placed on travel times or travel time functions. After pointing out in a general fashion the relationship between specification errors and data errors, ways are indicated in which inaccuracies of the travel times affect the outcome of travel prediction. A discussion of potential explanatory factors of travel time is followed by a recommendation for establishing a travel time model. Special attention is paid to the amount of travel time used at intersections. /TRRL/
