THE CHANGING MARKET FACTORS IN OIL AND PRODUCT STORAGE IN EUROPE--A PRIVATE COMPANY'S RESPONSE

This article describes how one company, Oiltanking, is meeting the demand for increased storage of oil and oil products. When it was founded in 1972, the company had some 500,000 cu m of storage mostly concentrated in Germany; since then its storage has increased to approximately 2.8 million cu m. The company's Ghent installation, which is now one of their largest, is designed as a cargo-handling terminal accommodating ships up to 60,000 dwt, and to this end tanks for low and high flash petroleum products have been erected. This terminal is also equipped for redelivery by road tank cars and barges. The company's terminals in Cophenhagen and Hamburg have also been expanded to serve as distribution centres for the Northern regions. A large terminal at Nordenham, near Bremen, was recently brought into use and there is also one in Amsterdam for the distribution of products to Holland, Germany, U.S., U.K., and Scandinavia; this particular terminal can be reached by ships of 85,000 dwt. The Company's activities are not confined to Europe and 270 acres of land have been acquired on the Houston Ship Channel, Texas. Significantly, this terminal is linked to the major oil pipeline system in America. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,036.
