A NEW HEAVY LIFT METHOD FOR SMALL FEEDER SHIPS

A new method for lifting heavy cargoes from ship to shore is described as used on the 2,300-dwt container feeder ship Birka, shipping heavy transformers from Sweden to the Venezuelan port of Matanzas on the river Orinoco. When unloading, the goods are moved within the ship by hydraulics into position beneath the large lifting rig, and then with the help of jacks and the rig onto the quay. This method is seen to be precise and unusually safe, and since all handling equipment is carried on board, all that is needed is a quay on which to unload. This new system means that small ships with heavy cargoes can now enter shallow river ports, previously inaccessible. It is stated that the present lifting capacity of 360 tons on this vessel can be improved in the future to allow a capacity of up to 750 tons. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,037.
