RECENT APPLICATIONS OF AUTOMATIC CONTROLS TO EXISTING ENGINE DESIGNS
The Author describes four automatic-control systems supplied to Delian Cruises by Baily Meters and Controls Ltd for two twin-screw cruise liners. Both were propelled by direct-drive slow-speed Diesel engines, of the Doxford "L" type in one and opposed-piston H & W--B & W in the other. In addition to allowing each engine to be operated if desired in the manner used before the application of automatic control, each control system had to satisfy the following basic requirements: 1. Main engines to be manoeuvrable by one engine officer with a reduced watch-keeping complement for the main engine room. 2. Main engines to be controlled from the engine room during manoeuvres, with bridge control of the main-engine speed under Navigation (Full away) conditions. 3. Emergency stop trip of each engine to be possible from bridge and engine-room consoles. 4. An alarm system with repeaters on the bridge for conditions likely to prevent continued running of the main engines in automatic control. 5. If one engine is stopped by an emergency stop trip operated by an alarm, or by an operator under Navigation condition, the other main engine to revert to Dead Slow Ahead. Each complete system was engineered from a comprehensive range of the Company's standard control "building blocks" to form the various sub-systems described by the Author under the headings of interlock and alarm systems, speed-control systems, control drives, and power supplies.
