The first "round" of jackets for the North Sea were designed in accordance with techniques successfully developed for structures in the Gulf of Mexico. The so-called "design-wave" loading that is the basis of current platform designs uses a monochromatic representation of the largest wave likely to occur at the site. Generally, the base bending moments are calculated for each wave condition and the full structural and stress analysis carried out only when these are a maximum. It is assumed that the structure can withstand any other applied wave if it can withstand the largest wave. An analysis is made of the dynamic response of structures to both waves and current action.
