EXPERIENCES WITH FINE-JET FLAME-CUTTING IN SHIPBUILDING

An adaptation of the conventional oxygen-cutting process has been introduced in which special fine-jet nozzles and a cutting-oxygen pressure of 2 N/sq mm enable cutting speed to be increased by 15 to 20%, together with a decrease in costs and an improvement in quality. This fine-jet method was initially developed by ZIX (the central welding-institute) at Halle and further developed to production standard at the Mathias-Thesen shipyard, Wismar, where, with the co-operation of both ZIS Halle and the VEB Ingenieurburo Schiffbau Rostock, the method was introduced in 1976. The Authors describe the method, give an account of the development work and testing carried out at the shipyard, and present results of the tests and a technical and economic assessment of the method.
