Greater purchasing power and the internationalisation of tastes brought about by wider travel and increased communication have, over the past 15 years, made luxury foods and out-of-season horticultural produce part of the way of life in western Europe. One of the major factors affecting the availability of fresh commodities has been the increasing sophistication of means of maritime transport in thermal or refrigerated containers. Helping to meet this demand are the three new regular containership services being introduced this year to link Europe with the Caribbean, Australasia and South Africa.
