MASSIVE LOAD
The impetus for the development of techniques for the movement of kiloton loads has come from the construction methods employed by both the offshore and shipbuilding industries. It may be necessary to transfer a complete rig, ship or ship-section from construction ways to launching ramp or floating dock. To move structures of this size requires not only equipment to provide the brute force but a specialised know-how if the job is to be done with safety and control. Much of this was perfected by companies in the US. The article describes the equipment and methods employed by one such company using specially designed Gripper Jacks, Translifts and Chain Jacks.
