SHOP PRIMERS--THE MOST IMPORTANT PAINT COAT
The techniques and procedures necessary to obtain effective control over corrosion of steel by use of shop primers are considered in this paper. The importance of surface preparation is emphasised and methods for assessing surface cleanliness and configuration are briefly described. Another important factor is the type of abrasive used and some general recommendations for both grit and shot for use with centrifugal wheel machines are made. Comparative performance and quality features together with typical coverage factors are given for a number of preconstruction coatings to assist in the choice of primer. The paper concludes with a discussion on the cost of shop priming, the interference of primers on welding and cutting, and the precautions to be taken to safeguard operators' health.
