SIMPLIFIED DESIGN FOR TORSIONAL LOADING OF ROLLED STEEL MEMBERS

The design of a beam to include torsion is usually achieved by transforming torsion into ordinary bending, which is accomplished by substituting a lateral force times beam section depth for the applied torsional moment on a beam section. The lateral force can then be treated as a lateral load acting on the flange of the beam. This substitution, however, overestimates or underestimates the lateral shear force and, consequently, either overestimates or underestimates the lateral bending that causes warping normal stresses. Modification of the above approximate solution and the flexural analogy method with beta modifier is described. The derivations of the formulas for beta are detailed. Torsional stresses, and a method for the design of wide flange beam section are also described. Four examples are presented to illustrate the application of this method.
