The article reviews the casualty statistics for jack-ups, semisubs and merchant vessels, and summarizes the development of fixed offshore platforms. The construction and inspection of steel structures are dealt with in detail, steel characteristics are listed. Welding and test methods are then described, and inspection of existing structures and of damaged structures is discussed.
