LARGEST PRIVATE TANK FOR NYK
What is claimed to be the world's largest towing tank owned by a private company has been completed by NYK at Tsu, Japan. The tank, at the Tsu Research Laboratories at the Tsu shipyard, is 240m long, 18m wide and has an 8m water depth. It is to be used for hydrodynamic performance tests of both ships and offshore structures. The extra-large dimensions allow better estimates of speed, required main engine power, and ship manoeuvrability and seaworthiness characteristics by minimising the scale errors between the model and real ship sizes. In addition to the usual towing of self-propelled model tests, the effects on offshore structures when rolling, pitching, heaving and drifting and their structural strength while being floated and moored can be studied. Unlike conventional ship model tanks, the Tsu facility has an auxiliary carriage in addition to the main carriage for resistance and propulsion tests. The auxiliary is used for transverse movements and those around a vertical axis for testing manoeuvrability and seaworthiness. It is driven in the longitudinal direction by the main carriage thus enabling complicated movements of the test models. The main carriage travels at a maximum speed of 7m per sec and the auxiliary carriage, combined with main carriage, moves 3m per sec for longitudinal movements plus or minus 1.5m per sec for transverse movements and plus or minus 1.5 deg per sec movements about the vertical axis.
