ICE FREE HARBOURS

Experiments with wavemachines in water subjected to surface cooling are described. It is found that wave action will provide water mixing and retard ice formation. Eventual ice formation takes the form of frazil ice and slush which congregates at the water surface. The growing slush layer is found to insulate underlying water against heat losses. Mass transportation of slush ice in the direction of wave propagation is proven. The clearing of ice from harbour basins by artificial wave action is proposed and suitable wave machines for this purpose are discussed.
