HOW INSTRUMENTS BOOST COATINGS APPLICATION PRODUCTIVITY

Corrosion protection which is an important objective in industrial maintenance painting requires that the paint film fuction as an effective barrier against moisture, oxygen, and chemicals to the surface being protected. Today there is a trend towards fewer coats and thicker films; and this has added further impetus to the routine usage of thickness instrumentation. Accurate film thickness instrumentation provides the operating control and the factual basis upon which the judgement of the margin above minimum specifications must be made. Dry film thickness measurement instruments fall into two broad catagories, Direct Measurement, and Proximity Measurment. A self-energized reading magnetic instrument known as the Elcometer, and an electronic-magnetic instrument utilizing probes based on Hall Effect transducers or on magnetoresistors are described. Three different levels of dry film thickness instrument usage by individual application technician, job superintendents and inspectors, and project managers and engineers, are also described.
