RESISTANCE TO LIQUEFACTION DUE TO SUSTAINED PRESSURE

The increased resistance of sands to liquefaction after being subjected to periods of sustained pressure is investigated. Four series of underained isotropically onsolidated cyclic triaxial tests were performed on remolded samples of Montery No. 0 sand. Eight series of undrained isotorphically consolidated cyclic triaxial tests were performed on undisturbed and reconstructed samples of four different sands. The investigation indicated that the pore pressure response (R) ration increased by a factor of from 1.5-2.0 with an average value of 1.75. It is noted that the significant increase in R due to restrained pressure should be taken into account when evaluating the liquefaction characteristics of sand deposits.
