The behavior of hte model footings is of particular interest to the discussor because of the lack of experimental evidence and experience regarding the bearing capacity of saturated cohesionless soils subjected to earthquake effects. A report is included that provides some of the details of the footing behavior as cyclic shear stresses were applied to the sands. Three reasons for presenting this information are given: To point out that the model footings began to settle before a state of initial liquefaction of the sand was attained during the shaking; considering their size, the model footing settlement prior to initial liquefaction were large; and, to observe that an upward flow of excess pore water was not necessary to initiate settlement of the model footings in the authors' tests. Because the authors' paper and the report quoted by the discussor do not present pore pressure and footing settlement data versus time, a number of assumptions are necessary to estimate the effective stress condition at which footing settlement would be expected to begin. The behavior of the model footings are summarized in sequence and presented at the end of the discussion.
