It is the opinion of the discussors that the mathematical solution which predicts the dynamics of vibratory pile driving should be capable of doing more than predicting a natural frequency along the piles for one set of assumptions. Problems having the complexity of vibratory pile driving must be approached within a framework of theoretical concepts that give each calculation a physical significance. The concept of mechanical impedance, as developed by the discussors, is examined. Impedance is described as the ratio of the force vector to the particle velocity vector at the point in question. Further use of this concept in avoiding erroneous results and misapplications are described.
