INTEGRATED STUDY OF REINFORCED EARTH-II: BEHAVIOR AND DESIGN-DISCUSSION
The most serious deficiency in the current understanding of reinforced earth-retaining structures is in the lack of a viable theoretical or analytical model. The use of an "at rest" lateral pressure coefficient to accurately predict the magnitude of horizontal stress is examined. Results of the calculations were in general agreement with the classical methods used. It is noted that designs tend to be very conservative, and therefore difficult to extrapolate to other sites with different backfill and foundation conditions. It is impossible, without a good theoretical model, to predict the performance of alternate reinforcing systems and materials.
