The first issue of "IABSE Structures" presents some examples of standard road bridges used as highway overcrossings. The construction of a great number of overcrossings depends on a national road construction programme. Such a construction programme is more or less advanced according to the countries considered. It goes along the same line concerning a possible standardization of constructions such as overcrossings. In some countries overcrossings have already been built according to some standad bridges, in others, projects of typical bridges are being considered, studied or completed, while in further countries, typical construction were given up for economical or aesthetical reasons. The articles presented hereafter show but a small part of all what is realized in the whole world on the subject. Some articles describe a precise project, some report on a series of bridges, constructed or planned; two articles do not deal direcly with the theme but present some related aspects. Information allowing a possible comparison between the examples presented is given at the beginning of each article. The whole of these articles would tend to show a trend in the construction of overcomings; precast supporting members in reinforcedor prestressed concrete and slab cast in situ. /Author/
