PERFORMANCE RECORD OF FLY ASH AS A CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL

Three projects in the Kansas City area which involve the use of fly ash as a substitute for conventional soil fill or as an additive to natural soils are described in this paper. In these projects, fly ash was used as lightweight backfill behind a 25-ft high retaining wall; structural fill beneath an oil storage tank; and an additive to highly plastic, residual clay in a road subgrade. The backfill was constructed in stages allowing time for the fly ash to develop strength to take advantage of the known self-hardening properties. The backfill was only lightly compacted using a 2-ft square vibrating plate. The highly plastic clay was modified and stabilized by the addition of self-hardening fly ash. Addition of the fly ash reduced the plasticity index and improved the strength characteristics of the mix. Conventional construction equipment was used to mix and compact the fly ash with the in-situ soil.
