BEHAVIOUR OF REINFORCING STEEL IN CONCRETE

CIMENT METALLURGIQUE

The first part of the article describes the influence of various anions on the depassivation of steel in an environment having a ph between 8 and 13. The permissible limit of chloride concentration, sulphide and sulphate content is indicated. The toxicity of the anions is all the more marked as the ph is lower. Based on these results and on the composition of the liquid phase of the concrete, an interpretation of the corrosion behaviour of concrete is presented. Part 2 describes the experiments carried out to study the brittleness due to hydrogen. The tests were conducted on very high elastic limit, subjected to cold deformation and a tension of 80% of its elastic steel with a limit. The study was made of the influence of sulphide and ph value. /TRRL/
