SOME OBSERVATIONS ON LIQUID LIMIT VALUES WITH REFERENCE TO PENETRATION AND CASAGRANDE TESTS

The authors compare the use of a British standard cone penetrometer with those of America, Russia and India, in the measurement of soil liquid limit values. Literature on the subject from several countries is reviewed and the use of the cone penetrometer traced. A description is given of tests carried out by the authors and the results which are presented in graph form compare cones with the Casagrande cup. The cone to BS 1377 was found to give the most accurate results, but it is suggested that an international standard should be agreed for the measurement of the liquid limit. /TRRL/
