INTRODUCTION OF INTERNAL TORSIONAL MOMENTS BY MEANS OF PRESTRESSING

INTRODUCCION DE MOMENTOS INTERNOS DE TORSION MEDIANTE PRETENSADO

This article studies the possibility of transferring moment to the carriageway by the intermediary of the torsional resistance of a beam. This is of particular interest for the superstructures of urban bridges, which are often sharply curved in plan and have little space available for their piers, thus leading to arrangements which are heavily loaded in torsion. It is possible to introduce, through prestressing, internal torsional moments which directly counteract the applied torsion, and thanks to this to reduce or even eliminate rotation of the cross-section due to torsion. The following cases are studied:- hollow beam with cantilever wings subjected to a torsional couple at one end; continuous eccentric loading; section with lateral cantilever wings (typical bridge deck); simply supported beam laterally restrained at its extremities and subject to torsion (case of the main beams of a bridge, united at their ends by transverse beams); curved cantilever beam and curved beam, simply supported and laterally restrained at their ends to resist torsion. For all these cases the arrangement of the prestressing cables is analytically studied. /TRRL/
