THE TOBI SYSTEM FOR UNDERPASSES

TOBI-TUNNELN

The new prefabricated system for pedestrian underpasses, culverts, etc is claimed to have many advantages. Depending on ground conditions, the base is either a solid in-situ slab, solid slab units, or units consisting of narrow beams. Wall units slot into the base, and the recess is filled with sand. The roof units are solid slabs which span between the walls, with shoulders fitting between the wall units. Horizontal joints between roof units are filled with cement mortar to ensure monolithic action. Backfilling need not be carried out evenly on the two sides. The walls act as simply supported slabs under service loading. Wall units incorporate cables and fittings for lights. The finish is exposed aggregate. The structure is easy and quick to erect, has a better finish and is less expensive than in-situ underpasses. Tests show that the structure is capable of withstanding service loading satisfactorily, and is not damaged even if backfill is applied only on one side. The system has been approved by the Swedish national road administration for underpasses of 5 x 2.5 M area. Work proceeds on other sizes. /TRRL/
