STABILITY ANALYSIS FOR ECCENTRICALLY LOADED FOOTINGS
This report presents a stability analysis based on a slip surface derived from experimental results for eccentrically loaded footings resting on sand. Preliminary two-dimensional tests were carried out on rigid wooden model footings using a stiffened perspex sided wooden container for the sand bed. Constant rate of strain tests to failure were carried out on all the models using a special roller and ball bearing arrangement to allow for the unrestrained movement and tilt for the models. Results of a larger number of these tests included the following observations: One sided failure occurs on the side of the eccentricity of the load; the size of the failure zone becomes smaller with increased eccentricity ratios; and, typical configurations exist for the failure surfaces for the cases of eccentricities within and outside the middle third of the footing. The authors concluded that the method of calculating the bearing capacity for centrally loaded footings analyzig the stability of slip surfaces can be extended to the case of eccentrically loaded footings. A close agreement exists between the theoretical and experimental values for the plane strain case. And, Meyerhof's effective width concept is adequate for smaller eccentricity ratios.
